Selling out

Published on 01/06/2007

Reading regularly The Chem Blog, I’ve often wondered if I could have ever done anything like the E.J.Corey mugs: already a must among organic chemists, I presume.

Sadly, an undergraduate doesn’t have much time to think of a popular characters, who might deserve a set of mugs or whatever kitchen tool or piece of furniture who could think of.

What’s more, my extremely small number of frequent readers (very loyal but, still, this remains a blog for connoisseurs) makes me foresee terrible economic consequences If I asked a company to prepare, say, ten, personalized items.

However, I might have found something which incredibly combines low production costs and no waste of time for me (I’m preparing for my very last series of exams, so you can easily imagine how appreciated it is for me to save time these days).

Unsurprisingly, the number of comments reached its zenith when I talked about organic chemistry: that was no surprise, as I see it, since 75% of scientific blogs are written by organic chemists and, more importantly, read by organic chemists.

As you might have understood, I also wrote a proper, official, lab notebook, which I’m going to hand in to my professor next week: I took the inspiration for my posts from the lab reports, living them up a little bit.

Today I got the official stuff printed and poshly bound by one those plastic spirals (I’m sorry, lads: no idea whether there’s a single word to call it but I bet you’ve got it).

Take a look at the outstanding quality!

That gave me an idea: what if I print a slightly different version, something that encompasses the serious reports (tables, procedures, plain calculations, etc.) with crazy comments and pictures (pimping amino acids, cigars, tea, good-looking girl, etc)?

So, here I am: The Half Decent Pharmaceutical Chemistry Blog presents “Laboratoire Organique – The Notebook”.

Laboratoire Organique - The Notebook

This is just a prototype but if any of you is interested, you can order a copy via email (halfdecent at gmail dot com). I don’t know how much printing and, above all, sending it to your country will cost, but then I promise I’ll add only a pathetic extra to this production cost.

I’ll create a permanent link to this post on the sidebar.

Oh, and don’t forget to tell me your top five reagents: the survey will finish on Tuesday!

I admit it's a stupid reason, but I'd probably comment a lot more often if I didn't have to type my name in every single time. Gets old after a while, y'know.
I thought all the pharma-chem posts a while back were pretty interesting and well-done.

It's not stupid at all. It's on the to-do-list... :)

Those posts are going to be back pretty soon.

psi-star-psi: I have to type my name every time I comment at your site.

that's why it's important to choose a short name

Yes, but I'm much lazier than you are.

Sorry for the dumb question and for the late comment (actually I came across this blog only yesterday), but why couldn't you simply publish your notebook online in PDF format (maybe covered by a Creative Commons license) instead of printing and sending it by mail? It'd be easier, wouldn't it?

Good idea! I'm gonna do it as soon as possible.
